Great start for McGlinchy’s Men

The Waterford Senior Footballers got their season off to a great start with a well earned victory over University of Limerick in the WIT Carriganore Sports Campus today. The McGrath Cup Preliminary Round tie was the first competitive game for Waterford under new manager Tom McGlinchy.

Waterford had the brightest start and ran up a score of 1-2 after just six minutes, with the Ballinacourty native Patrick Hurney raising the first green flag of the game. It took the visitors another three minutes to register their first score with a point from Alan McLoughlin. Waterford drove on for the remainder of the half with some great points from Paul Whyte, Shane Ahearne, Michael O’Halloran and Michael Curry. Waterford were in the lead by 1-8 to 0-2 at the break.

The home side extended the lead just after the break with Patrick Hurney and Gavin Nugent pointing. The students began to find form and hit the Deise for three points on the trot but Waterford’s Conor Phelan and David Grey both kept Waterford well in front. But Limerick struck for their first goal from the towering Gearoid Hegarty just on the thirteen minute mark. It paved the way in their following attacks, which yielded a goal and a point. The goal again coming from the boot of Gearoid Hegarty. Waterford still leading by three points with just over ten minutes of play left. Waterford got back into the game and the scoring power of Patrick Hurney and Gavin Nugent got the Deise back to seven point cushion. But a last minute point from Denis Daly for UL ended the game. Final score. Waterford 1-16 to University of Limerick 2-7
