Gala All Ireland Junior Camogie Championship Semi Final August 7th 2010

 Waterford 2-14 Meath 1-9

Resilient Royals Succumb to Determined Deise

The pre-match tag of favourites weighted heavily on Waterford for long stages of Saturdays Gala All Ireland Semi-final. At no point did Meath lead, but a gritty performance by the underdogs made it an uncomfortable afternoon in Dr. Cullen Park, Carlow for players and supporters alike. However the team showed the character required to book a return to Croke Park for the second year in a row, where they will face Antrim on Sunday September 12th.

Fresh from her All Ireland Puc Fada victory Trish Jackman had Waterford's first point on thirty seconds. Striking as she had seven days earlier in the Annanaverna Mountains she converted a prodigious free from the left wing seventy five meters from goal. Jane Dolan replied soon after for Meath and within minutes the same player after a strong solo run kicked the ball narrowly wide.

Adopting the popular tactic of teams playing more skilful opponents, Meath withdrew an attacker and cluttered the area between midfield and their own forty five. However three Áine Lyng points edged Waterford in front. This should have settled the nerves but constant harassment and a finicky referee ensured an uneasy afternoon was in prospect.

Meath's work rate was impressive as they harangued the player in possession. Buoyed by the slow scoring rate their confidence increased and all too often they were now reaching the sliothar first. Corner forward Sinead Hackett had their second point on fifteen minutes.

They were undone however when a technical foul was called on their wing back when taking a sideline cut. The resultant free was launched into the parallelogram by Karen Kelly. The ball broke to the left side where in typical wing forward fashion Trish Jackman was rushing in and flashed a great ground shot to the net. The same player added two point soon after and Deise supporters were thinking - normal service resumed.

In spite of the five point lead Waterford were still playing tentatively. It seemed the fear of losing and not reaching the September finale was weighing heavily on their shoulders. This was clearly apparent when Elizabeth Lynch goaled for The Royals on the 25th minute. A packed Waterford defence cleared their lines but when the ball dropped fifty meters out three Meath players were available and no white and blue shirt in sight. Centre forward Elizabeth Oakes shot towards goal and Donaghmore Ashbourne's Lynch, playing her sixteenth season of Intercounty Camogie, reacted first at the edge of the square flicking the ball to the net.

A further Lyng point left the score at 1-7 to 1-3 at half time.

Encouraged by their performance in the first thirty minutes and fortified by management at the break Meath took the game to the favourites in the opening minutes. Points from Hackett and Dolan narrowed the margin, in response the Waterford attack had two wides. Concerned by this turn of events Waterford reorganised their defence with Jackman going to centre back and Shona Curran to full back.

Two pointed frees from Áine Lyng restored the four point half time lead. The Waterford back line were now in control of matters and successive Meath attacks were repelled. They were now relying heavily on long range frees (given for innocuous fouls) from centre back Aileen Donnelly dropping in around the goal. These were dealt with confidently and the sliothar released to the attack with greater speed.

Waterford's second goal arrived in the sixteenth minute. Centre forward Lyng's tenacity unlocked the Meath rearguard releasing Karen Kelly on goal. Once in front of her marker the St. Annes player is unstoppable, her rasping shot gave Emily Mangan in the Meath goal no chance.

Meath responded well with points from Dolan and Edel Guy narrowing the margin again to four points. As time ticked away the likelihood of them scoring the goal they needed to bridge the gap receded.

On twenty two minutes we had the score of the game converted in the style we have come to expect from this team. Shona Curran bravely won the ball in the Waterford square, breaking out to the right wing she delivered to Áine Lyng. Winning the ball ahead of her marker she turned and struck a deft pass into the path of Karen Kelly. Still on the right wing 30 meters from goal Kelly took the sliothar in her stride and struck confidently over the bar.

In spite of this Meath continued to ask questions with Edel Guy and Jane Dolan scoring a point a piece. The scoreline now read Waterford 2-11 Meath 1-9 with three minutes plus injury time to go. The Deise were still living dangerously and a Meath goal could have derailed their championship ambitions. The defence held their nerve and shutdown the Meath attack for the remainder of the game. Two further points from Lyng and one from Kelly finished the scoring and set up a September return to Headquarters.

A hard earned victory, where the characteristic honesty of the team saw them succeed when playing below the standards they have set themselves. For Meath a second successive defeat at this stage should not derail the progress they are making. Waterford went through the same rough experiences and learned from it.

Waterford's opponents in the final will be Ulster Senior champions Antrim who defeated Down by one point in the other Semi-final played at Casement Park on Saturday. Star of the show was O'Donovan Rossa's Jane Adams with three goals. Rossa's were All Ireland senior club champions in 2008 and in the same year they defeated Gaultier in the final of the All Ireland 7's in Kilmacud. So lots of quality players in the Saffron's line up.

Speaking after their Ulster Final win over Derry earlier in the season team manger Mickey McCullagh said "we wanted two trophies at the start of the year, we've got one and we'll get back into training and start working towards getting the other one". Waterford have been warned.

 Waterford 3-18 Down 0-6

All Ireland Semi Final place confirmed with a mauling for Down

If the previous weeks easy victory over Dublin left us wondering how well the progression of the camogie team is going, the performance in Dunaghmore Ashbourne on Saturday left no doubt. On the busiest weekend of the year for intercounty action, Waterford delivered an emphatic performance to rank with any other at the various venues throughout the country.

The two teams met at the same venue and at the same stage of competition exactly a year ago. On that occasion it required a controversial referring decision by the referee, disallowing a Down goal in injury time, to confirm a Waterford victory. Coincidentally we had Deise goal harshly marked off at the same end on Saturday but it was of no relevance to the result.

Team manager Andy Moloney and his mentors Carolyn Aherne and Niall Dunphy had the team primed to perfection. They were rewarded with a level of determination and consistency for the full hour that Down were unable to match. Excellent physical preparation under the expert eye of Shay Fitzpatrick apparent also as they relentlessly maintained the high standard until the final whistle.

As a result of the victory Waterford top the group and go forward to the All Ireland semi finals on August 7th. Their opponents will be decided this weekend with three counties in contention - Antrim, Laois and Meath. Each will bring their own challenge, but no fear for a Waterford team determined to return to Croke Park in September.

The early stages of Saturday's game highlighted the difference between the teams. With five minutes elapsed Waterford had four points on the board. Down with a similar amount of possession recorded four wides, a mixture of poor shooting and tenacious tackling.

The Waterford defence has a very settled look to it now. Sally O'Grady and Shona Curran provide a strong spine at full back and centre back respectively. Dynamic corner backs Emma Hannon and Kate Marie Hearne are in perpetual motion, a corner forwards nightmare. Jennie McCarthy and Jennie Simpson on the wings were outstanding on Saturday, impeccable distribution a hallmark of both players performances. Management restored the St. Anne's partnership of Charlotte Raher and Mairead Murphy to midfield and both players prospered.

As the first half drew to a close Down would have been relatively happy heading to the dressing rooms only six points behind on a scoreline of 0-9 to 0-3. But in the closing seconds goalkeeper Katrina McCrickard having made an outstanding save from Áine Lyng was helpless as Nicola Morrissey flashed the rebound to the net.

Down started the second half well with a point from Karen McMullen, cancelled out by a Gráinne Kenneally effort two minutes later. Waterford's dominance was emphasised for the rest of the game playing a superior brand of camogie. Moving the sliothar at speed and based on teamwork rather then the individual. The Northern defence was repeatedly carved open. Two Áine Lyng goals and a succession of points from the forwards sealed victory.

The focus will return to club action over the coming weeks and one hopes all the players come through without injury. The maturity and experience earned over the recent seasons was evident on Saturday. The time is right for an All Ireland victory.

WATERFORD UNDER 16 CAMOGIE

Limerick 2-12 Waterford 1-9

Waterford played Limerick last Saturday in the final round game of the All-Ireland B Championship.  The game was played in Ballyagran, Co. Limerick. The conditons were perfect for camogie with a nice warm day and little or no breeze. With both teams already having qualified for the All-Ireland semi-final there was not a huge amount at stake apart from determining who would top the group.   Having said that both teams provided a competitive contest. Waterford took the advantage of trying girls in new playing positions and this has given the mentors increased options around the field.  Waterford opened the scoring with a fine point from An Rinn's Fiona Morrisey.  It was point for point until Limerick pulled away with two goals leaving the half time score of 2 goals and 5 points to 5 points.  Waterford made a good start to the second half with some excellent free taking from St. Anne's Zoe O'Donoghue and again Fiona Morrisey.  Waterford pulled a goal back with a great long range pass from Lismore's Aoife Hannon into club mate Ruth Geoghegan.  Although the Waterford girls fought hard in the second half the game still ended with a six point win for the Limerick side. The final scoreline was Limerick 2goals and 12 points to Waterford 1 goal and 9 points.  Waterford will now take on either Derry or Armagh in the All-Ireland semi-final on April 24th at  venue to be confirmed.

Camogie Players Shine on Astro Turf

The final league match of this year's campaign turned out to be a quite unique occasion on Sunday in Dublin. With the main pitch unplayable at the St. Brigids club, the game was played on their outstanding full size all weather pitch. Liberated from the heavy underfoot conditions of recent weeks the players served up a fantastic hour's fare of free flowing camogie.

Some of the passing and movement in the first thirty minutes when Waterford clinically carved open the Down defence for three goals was quite exquisite. If F.C. Barcelona of Catalunya played camogie, this was how they would play it. The performance was all the more impressive when you also consider all the players involved played club league matches on Friday evening.

The players wasted no time adjusting to the synthetic surface. The sliothar moved speedily and freely suiting players with good touch and control. Defensively Waterford were safe and secure and never looked like conceding a goal. Fionnuala and Sarah Louise Carr had early points for Down but the Waterford attack was in scintillating form.

In particular corner forward Deirdre Fahey, a series of defenders endeavoured to subdue the UCC student without success. Similarly full forward Jennie Simpson gave the Down full back a torrid time as she repeatedly advanced to the incoming sliothar and distributed quickly to her teamates. Both players had goals in the 12th and 17th minutes to give Waterford a lead they never relinquished.

An injury to Nicola Morrissey threatened to disrupt the flow but her replacement Niamh Rockett staked her claim for a place in the starting lineout with an assured performance and two points. The first a superb effort from the left wing having fielded an 60 meter delivery from imposing centre back Trish Jackman was exceptional by any standards.

The third goal arrived in the 23rd minute, again exceptional teamwork opened the way and when the ball ended with Áine Lyng 10 meters out there was going to be only one outcome.

The players headed to the dressing rooms with Waterford leading on a scoreline of 3-4 to 0-6. Down, having had the advantage of a strong breeze blowing towards the Navan Road end, glad to have an opportunity to reorganise.

The Northerners started the second half well and slowly narrowed the gap with points from Lisa McCracken and Sarah Louise Carr (2).  Their tormentor in chief, Deirdre Fahey, had to leave the field due to an injury. Buoyed by this they raised their game further and a Lisa Hughes goal left three points between the teams with 10 minutes left on the clock. Soon after Fiona Ni Chadhla in the Waterford goal made a tremendous save from a rasping drive by Carr to preserve Waterford's lead.

Realising the game was in the balance again they stepped up a gear, led by the effervescent Lyng at centre forward a series of white flags were raised to banish any doubts.

The league over now, we have the Munster and All Ireland Championships to look forward to. Last year this team came very close to being the first Waterford team in decades to reach a Munster Senior final. Can they surmount that hurdle this time round? The panel looks stronger this year. Management have experimented during the league campaign and look now to have plenty of options with healthy competition for places on the starting fifteen. Roll on the summer.

WATERFORD UNDER 16 CAMOGIE OFF TO WINNING START

Offaly 1 - 4   Waterford 2 - 6

Waterford took on Offaly last Saturday in the first round of the All-Ireland championship.  The game was played in Lusmagh, Co. Offaly in front of a large home crowd.  The Waterford girls got off to a flying start and had Offaly on the back-foot for most of the first half.  Having played with the wind in the first half the half time score was 1-4 to 1-1 in favour of Waterford. The second half began with Offaly applying a lot of pressure around mid-field and the Waterford girls had to be at their best in defence to prevent clear scoring chances.  Waterford showed some brilliant individual skills to keep the Offaly girls at bay.  When the final whistle blew the Waterford girls knew they had been in a hard battle and had come out victorious on a scoreline of 2-6 to 1-4.  This is a fantastic start for the Waterford girls in their quest to reach the All-Ireland final for a second year in succession.  Their next game is against Laois at a Waterford venue on 3rd. April.

National Camogie League Division 2

Limerick 1-10 Waterford 1-10

Stalemate in Killmallock

Waterford's third outing yielded their first point of this year's campaign. It could so easily have been two, but some wayward shooting proved their undoing. Having surrendered a six point half time lead to Galway the previous week and leaving the points behind a positive performance was imperative.

Niamh Mulcahy had an early point for the home team. This was followed by five consecutive scores by Waterford as they dominated possession. Looking secure defensively during this period, the attack moved at pace and some slick passing ensured a healthy five points to one lead midway through the half. Nicola Morrissey's two points were the result of outstanding teamwork.

However Limerick, relegated from Division 1 last season, were given a lifeline when defensive hesitancy allowed Orla Curtin score a soft goal. They finished the half stronger as Waterford struggled to regain their composure. The Shannonsiders leading by three points at the break 1-5 to 0-5.

This trend continued on the restart with four unanswered points for Limerick. Slowly the visitors turned the tide and point by point got to within four of the leaders. A long rang free from Áine Lyng dropped fortuitously under the bar on the 55th minute to leave just one between the sides setting up a hectic finale. The same player levelled soon after and victory looked a distinct possibility.

However Limerick nudged in front again with a further point from Mulcahy on the stroke of time. Stung by last weeks defeat, Waterford attacked again. The ball broke to Karen Kelly on the right hand side and the St. Anne's player levelled matters.

Overall the selectors will be happy with the draw. Parts of the performance will please them, particularly the skill in the early part of the first half and the tenacity in the latter part of the second. The game also identified areas to be worked on, Limerick put a lot more legal pressure in the tackle whereas Waterford conceded far too many frees. Players are been given the opportunity to pin down a starting berth with all panel members receiving pitch time in the first three matches.

WATERFORD U16'S KICKS OFF THE 2010 SEASON THIS WEEKEND

Waterfords u16 county team will kick off the 2010 season on Saturday next March 13th when they will take on Offaly in the U16B Inter county Championship at an Offaly venue to be arranged at the time of going to press. Under the guidance of team mentors Dan Geoghegan, Morgan Conway and Fiona Conway these girls will be all out to capture the 2010 U16 B title having been defeated by Wexford in 2009. The mentors have left no stone unturned in preparation for the upcoming season as they have been in training over the past six weeks and have played three challenge games, two against Wexford u16 and one against Corks u16 team. They were very impressed with the girls performance on all three occasions and found that the girls were improving in every match. These matches were played without the girls from Lismore as they were involved with the BCS camogie team who had qualified for the All Ireland Colleges 'A'final, they will be a great addition to the team when the championship begins. All in Waterford County Board would like to wish all involved the very best of luck for the coming season.

Hard Luck!

All in Waterford County Board would like to sympathise with all involved in the BCS Senior Camogie team who were narrowly defeated in the Colleges 'a' final by Loreto of Kilkenny on Saturday last.

LISMORE CAMOGIE CLUB NOTES

The AGM of Lismore Camogie Club was held on Wednesday 17th February. There was a minutes silence at the commencement of the meeting in memory of Denny Buckley who passed away during the year.  The secretary then gave a detailed account of the clubs performances during the year.  Both the Secretary and chairperson congratulated all those who took part at every grade and the selectors who put in so much time aswell. A special mention was given to the fact that the club competed in every final in the A Grade, winning Un14, Feile, Un18, Senior League, Junior Championship and also competed in several other underage tournaments held throughout the year.  Again it was said what a great honour for the club to win the Club of the Year indicating the great work the club also do on the County scene with representatives on the county board and also as selectors on several county teams. Both Chairperson and Secretary thanked our many sponsors and supporters especially the GAA for their continued support and both the primary and secondary schools for the use of their field.  Both Bunscoil Bothar na Naomh and Blackwater Community School were congratulated on their continued success in camogie in the schools especially BCS who were wished all the best in their All Ireland Final which takes place on March 6th.

WATERFORD CAMOGIE TEAM LOSE OUT TO GALWAY IN NATIONAL LEAGUE

WATERFORD 2-7   GALWAY 2-10

Waterford camogie team took the long trip to Galway on Sunday last February 28th to take on Galway in the second round of the National League Div. 2.With an experimental team, selectors Andy, Niall and Carolyn were hoping for a win to keep their hopes of qualifying for the final alive, as the girls were already defeated in the first round by last years league champions Wexford. In wind swept conditions the Deise girls were ahead by 2-5 to 0-5 at the interval, but alas like their male counter-parts in their league qualifier also against Galway on Sunday relinquished this lead in the second half as Galway were the eventual winners on a score line of 2-10 to 2-07.

National Camogie League Division 2

Waterford 2-7 Wexford 5-8
Unhappy St Valentines Day for Waterford Women Bogged Down in Fenor

At one level this was an inauspicious start to the Intercounty season for Waterford last Sunday in Fenor. The Wexford attack plundered five goals and returned to the Model County with two valuable league points.  Another view is the search for new talent by the Waterford selectors has unearthed some exciting potential. The home management also experimented with some positional switches for established players and many would agree this is the appropriate time to try things out.

Four players made their debuts on Sunday and all had good reason to be pleased with their efforts. At midfield Brickeys Mags McCarthy adjusted well to the intercounty challenge. St. Annes pair Zoe O’Donoghue and Siobhan Kavanagh justified their call up to the panel. Speedy Jessica Gleeson of Ardkeen introduced during the second half confirmed the widely held belief that she will thrive at this level.

There were very few scoring opportunities in the early part of the game at either end. Only one of the first seven scores came from open play, a goal for Wexford from Rathnure’s Eimear O’Connor. Waterford’s Áine Lyng pointed four frees as the Wexford defence struggled to contain the Deise girls. Nicola Morrissey scored a fine individual point on the twentieth minute to leave Wexford ahead by one point.

Just before the break Wexford full forward Fiona Kavanagh broke free to score an outstanding goal. Kavanagh was to prove the match winner adding two further goals in the second half. In spite of this Waterford full back Jennie Simpson having her first outing in this position played well and should be given time to settle into this berth.

Another bonus for the selectors is the return of Emma Hannon to the panel. The Gaultier star was outstanding at wing back, her accurate clearances & timely interceptions were invaluable. Her club mate Áine Lyng, kept Waterford in touch with two goals in the second half. But Wexford seemed to have more work done at this stage and fully deserved the victory.

Next up is a trip to Galway on February 28th.

In March Waterford will face Limerick and Down with the top team from the group heading to the League final.

This weekend many players will be involved in the Ashbourne 3rd level competitions hosted by C.I.T in Cork. W.I.T, with a good contingent of Waterford players heading to Cork as favourites. Lismore’s Gráinne Kenneally captains U.C.C. and will be keen to lift the Ashbourne Cup, Camogie’s oldest competition. The first final was played on April 18th 1915 between U.C.C. and U.C.D.

Waterford under 14 Camogie Presentation Night

The Under 14 County Camogie Team Presentation night took place at Crottys Inn, Leamybrien on Friday night last October 30th.This was in recognition of the work done by the under 14 squad for the year.

On the night the girls were presented with a certificate of participation. Their medals which they won at the Waterford Blitz were also presented. The highlight was the presentation of gear including the gear bag, tracksuit top and training top which they will receive.

Guest speakers on the night were Anne-Marie O'Gorman chairperson of the county Board who congratulated the girls and thanked the selectors Fiona, Jennifer and Billy for their commitment during the year. Morgan Conroy Chairperson of the Munster council praised the girls for their dedication to Camogie. Morgan who also attended some of their training sessions throughout the year also offered words of encouragement and stated that the girls showed great potential for the years ahead.Grainne Kenneally who represented the Waterford Junior County Panel told the girls what it takes to make it to the top level. Grainne gave some great words of advice to the girls for their future prospect in camogie.

On behalf of the mentors, Fiona thanked the girls for their support at training and their willingness to participate. Jennifer thanked all the parents  for their loyalty and support of the fundraising events, their transport of the girls to the training sessions, games etc.

Prior to the presentations, a slideshow of the girls activities throughout the year was on the display. This was followed by a fun table quiz under the ever able quiz master John Kiely. With twenty tables participating the contest was closely fought. The lucky team on the night in the adult section came from Ballygunner/Passage with their girls team being the runners-up. A playoff took place to separate the girls from their parents such was the level of competition. Well done to all who took part.

During the Quiz the raffle was held. We Congratulate Lisa Henley on being the winner of the Christmas cake donated by Jennifer Whelan and thanks to the parents for the many prizes supplied.

Special thanks to Jennifer and Fiona for their work in preparing for the night. U18B County Final

(Sponsored by Brickeys Camogie Club)

Cappoquin 4-4  An Rinn 0-7

The U18B County Final took place in wet under-foot conditions in Bushy Park on Sunday last November 1st at 11.30 Am. This final was contested by two western teams Cappoquin and An Rinn. Indeed this was a hard fought contest, but it was Cappoquin who came out on top in the end. Congratulations! to all involved.

U18A County Final

The final County final of the year will take place on Sunday next November 8th, which will be the U18 A final, the two teams taking part will be reigning County Champions Lismore and Eastern rivals St. Annes. Time and venue to be arranged at the time of going to press.

On Saturday 5th September, the Waterford Camogie Supporters Club are hosting a barbeque ahead of the county junior team’s quest to create history in Croke Park and bring the New Ireland Cup to the county for the first time.

Everyone is invited to attend, where you can meet the players and management as well as former Déise camogie stars and be involved in the build up to next weeks All Ireland final.

WLR FM and members from the local media will also be in attendance to capture the mood in the camp ahead of the big match, which takes place on Sunday 13th September in GAA headquarters, throw-in at 12.45pm.

The girls will be training from 5.30pm with the barbeque starting at 6.30pm in Dunhill GAA Centre. It promises to be a hugely enjoyable evening, so come out & show your support for all involved and be part of what is turning out to be an historic season for Waterford Camogie.

Many clubs in Waterford are holding coaching sessions for under 8’s and 10’s. Some clubs are playing challenge games among themselves to provide some game time. We would like to formalise this a little so that all clubs across the county can take part. Kids at that age crave games and it is important that we can provide games for them that will be enjoyable, inclusive and without emphasis on competition.

The Go Games model is recognised nationally as the most inclusive and fun for children beginning to play hurling and camogie.

There will be 4 Under 10 Camogie blitz days held at 16 venues between September 4th and October 3rd.

If your club does not already cater for this age group, then now is the ideal opportunity to remedy this. There is plenty time for a few fun sessions before these blitzes begin and can be used as a very positive way to promote your club in the local primary schools at the beginning of September.

These blitzes will focus on ground Camogie and understanding the roles of backs, centre fields and forwards by the use of Zones.

The blitzes will also focus on skill development by awarding points for hooks, blocks, catching, doubling and striking the sliothar in the air with the Hurley.

The host clubs will be responsible for organising and running the blitz days in their turn. No blitz should last any longer than an hour and a half, max 2 hours.

ST. ANNES 1-8   LISMORE 1-6

The Senior County final took place on Saturday evening last August 22nd in a somewhat dull and over-cast Kilgobinet GAA Grounds. The teams taking part in this year’s County Final were 2009 League winners Lismore and Eastern runners-up St.Anne's. This game was set to be a thriller as Lismore was all out to capture the championship title after an eight year gap. This game was a game of two halves with Lismore dominating the first half scoring 1-4 to St. Anne's 0-2. Saying that, St. Anne's kept up with the play but were unable to capitalise in their scoring as there was a strong cross wind which had a huge factor in the game.

The second half was dominated by St. Anne's scoring 1-6 to Lismores 0-2. As was in the first half the wind was a factor along with the fading light of the wet and damp night. Lismore were well in the game with fifteen minutes of normal time to go when St. Anne's Mairead Murphy hit the back of the Lismore net. This gave the St. Anne's girls great confidence which drove them forward holding Lismore scoreless for the rest of the game. Final score line of St.Anne's 1-8 Lismore 1-6.

U10 GO-GAME

Well done to all the U10 girls who took part in a mini-game at half-time. The teams that took part were Limore V Butlerstown and St. Annes V Gaultier.

COUNTY JUNIOR FINAL

The County Junior final is down for decision on Friday evening next August 28th. The teams taking part in this years final are neighbouring rivals Tallow and Lismore. Both teams had a good run up to the final as Tallow were qualified after playing three games having beaten Butlerstown and Cappoquin and were beaten by Lismore in the third round, but were table toppers by score difference. Lismore however, drew with both Butlerstown and Cappoquin as well as beating Tallow, thus qualifying them for the semi-final which was once again against Butlerstown in which they came out winners.

Tallow would be hoping for a win as it would make history for them as they didn't win a junior County Championship game since the 1970's. But Lismore will not let this happen if they have their way as they also would like to add to their tally of Junior Championship wins having won their last one in 2006,and having won their previous one in  1990. This Championship is sponsored by An Rinn Camogie club. Time and venue for this game to be arranged at the time of going to press.

‘’Heartache and devastation for Waterford Minor Girls’’

Waterford 1-15 Limerick 3-10

On Tuesday August 11th 2009 it was All Ireland final day for the Waterford Minor camogie team.

The venue was the immaculate Mallow GAA Grounds and opponents were Limerick minor camogie team. After coming down from the ‘A’ group, Limerick were the favourites coming into this game having beaten Kildare Down and Wexford.

After saying that, Waterfords pedigree was nothing to be sneezed at, as they had victories in all their games coming into the game, having beaten last years All Ireland champions Offaly in the first game giving them home advantage to Meath in which they had a comprehensive win in De La Salle in July.

In the semi-final the girls travelled the long journey to Ashbourne Co.Meath to take on Northeners Derry in which they had a three point victory over, thus qualifying them for the All Ireland final.

At 7 o’clock on Tuesday evening the game began. It was Waterford who were out of the blocks first with a goal from All Ireland Puck Fada champion Patricia Jackman in the first minute of the game followed by a Rachel Whelan point in the next two minutes.

Waterford were in the driving seat this early in the game. About five minutes into the game it was Limericks full forward Naomi Carroll who slotted Limericks first point over the bar, followed a minute later by a point from Caithriona McGlone for Waterford. Annette McAuliffe and Naomi Carroll scored Limericks next two points before Waterfords Patricia Jackman scored Waterfords next two points.

Again Limerick replied with another two points before Waterford replied with another two from Waterfords captain Marie Russell and Patricia Jackman, with Limericks Naomi Carroll ending the half’s scoring with a point. Indeed it was a very intense game, with both teams stepping up and giving it their all, but it was Waterford who had the edge over Limerick with a three point lead going into the second half. Half time score being Waterford 1-6 Limerick 0-6.

The second half began with one change made on the Waterford team, with Niamh Rockett replacing Mary Claire Dunphy who picked up a shoulder injury just on the stroke of half time.

It was Waterford who opened the score of the half with a point from substitute Niamh Rockett followed by another from Patricia Jackman. Limerick were finding it hard to contain the driving force of this Waterford outfit, but always kept them in their sights. Once again it was five minutes into the half before Naomi Carroll struck Limericks first point, before Marie Russell slotted over Waterfords third point from a hand pass from Patricia Jackman. Limerick and Waterford exchanged a point each over the next two minutes.

On the twentieth minute Limerick bounded home their first goal of the game from speedster Naomi Carroll. This didn’t knock the Deise girls confidence as they replied back with three points over the next five minutes (two from Patricia Jackman and one from Rachel Whelan). Limericks Kirsty Carroll and Waterfords Patricia Jackman scored the last two points of normal time. Waterford at this stage were five points up on a score line of 1-15 to 1-10.

It was on the 62nd going into the 63rd minute that all hell broke loose. A free that was awarded to Limerick was driven low into the the Limerick full-forward line was grabbed from the air by Naomi Carroll and went whooping to the back of the Waterford net. Two points were separating the teams, surely the whistle will be blown as it was well into the 63rd minute nearly 64, but no. The ball was grabbed by a Limerick player from out field and fed into the over crowded Waterford goal mouth and Whoops! the ball crossed the line! The whistle blew from the puck-out and that was the end of the game, the nightmare began, scenes of heartache and devastation, words cannot describe. Where did the extra time come from? The game was never stopped for injuries everyone present was struck dumb. ‘Sport can be so cruel’.

SENIOR CO. FINALS

On Saturday last August 15h it was Senior County Semi-final day. With four teams contesting for their place in the County final set for Saturday August 22nd. St. Annes played last years County Champions Gall Tir in wind swept and rainy De La Salle at 11.30 am, it was St.Annes who overcame Gall Tir on a score line of St.Annes 0-10 Gall Tir 0-6.

On Saturday evening it was Lismore and Butlerstown who contested the second semi-final in Stradbally. Conditions were very favourable with the rare summer sun shining, Lismore were winners on a score line of Lismore 2-10 Butlerstown 0-6. County finalists this year are St. Annes and Lismore.

Highly contested final;

St. Annes will be all out to capture the title once again having been beaten by Gall Tir in last years County final after a replay. But the Lismore out-fit will have a big say in this, as their hunger for victory will urge them on, as they didn't win a senior county championship title since 2001beating Ardkeen in this game. It wasn't from the want of trying as they contested several County Semi-finals and finals in this time frame. It was St. Annes who was the most dominant team along with Gall Tir sharing the County titles between them. St.Annes had the franchise of titles from 2003 - 2005 inclusive and were stopped in their tracks in 2006 by Gall Tir, but came back to beat Lismore in '07. It was the two eastern teams who contested the final last year with Gall Tir overcoming St. Annes in a two game battle as none of the teams could be separated in the initial County final.

This years County final is set to be a highly contested game as both teams were unbeaten coming into this years League Final in June. Lismore and St. Annes met in the qualifying round of the league and nothing separated the teams, but it was Lismore who overcame them in the League final after a nine year gap having won the league in 1999 and 2000.

Both teams were also unbeaten in the championship rounds of this years senior county championship and once again face each other in the County final. Both teams boasts of players on the County Adult team who are playing in the All Ireland Junior Final in Croke Park in September 13th. Both teams also have players from the County Minor and U16 teams who contested All Ireland finals this year, so there is an abundance of talent on both teams.

This game will be a hard one to call, but with both the hunger for success and the success of underage in Lismore over the past number of years, should improve Lismores chances.

COUNTY JUNIOR SEMI-FINAL;

On Friday evening last in sultry Stradbally there was one Junior semi-final down for decision, and that was Lismores and Butlerstowns Junior teams. Both of these teams met in the qualifying rounds and were undivided in scores. But it was Lismore who won the semi-final.Lismore 1-14 Butlerstown 0-6. Lismore now go on to meet neighbours Tallow in the County final on the weekend of August 29th.

All Ireland Junior Camogie Championship Semi Final August 8th Nowlan Park

 Waterford 1-13 Laois 1-7

Deise will Camogie in Croke Park in September

“But it ain't how hard you hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done. Now, if you know what you're worth, then go out and get what you're worth.” So spoke Rocky Balboa to his son in the 2006 movie.

Revamped Half back line

Waterford lined out with a revamped half back line. Mary O’Donnell was restored to centre back after her two match absence, Jennie Simpson returned to her position on the wing where she has been in tremendous form. Shauna Kiernan replaced the unfortunate Pauline Cunningham who suffered an injury in the win over Dublin. Hopefully she will be fit to fight for a place for the final as she has excelled at wing back all season. This semi final played in Nowlan Park will not go down as a classic although some delightful camogie was played at times, particularly in the first half. But it will be remembered as the one where “losing semi finalist” tag was ultimately shed.

We can now look forward to an historical first appearance by Waterford in Croke Park in September to contest an All Ireland final.

Brilliant Goal

An excellent first ten minutes was the corner stone of victory. A goal and four points to a solitary white flag from Laois with ten minutes elapsed gave the Deise a lead they never relinquished. The goal was a classic, designed and finished in Lismore. There was no apparent threat as Nicola Morrissey gathered possession on the wing under the shadow of the Old Stand sixty meters out. The alarm bells started ringing as she sprinted passed her marker towards the City end goal. She delivered a perfectly flighted ball to the edge of the small square. Club mate Gráinne Kenneally with telepathic understanding, timed her run from the opposite wing to perfection. She connected with the sliothar as it plummeted earthwards in midair and the leather orb flew passed Laois goalkeeper Laura Dunne. A goal to rank along side the best of goals scored at the Noreside venue. The four points all came from open play as the midlanders struggled to get into their stride.

Penalty

A controversial refereeing decision was the catalyst for igniting their challenge. Referee Pat Walsh awarded a penalty on twelve minutes. Sharpshooter Louise Mahony struck well but Aisling O’Brien reacted brilliantly and saved. A melee ensued close to the goal line, the referee whistled, the sliothar ended up in the Waterford net. Full back Sally O’Grady & O’Brien argued vehemently with umpire and referee that the ball only crossed the line after the whistle. Lesson learned, continue playing until, well just keep playing and apologise after! As Rocky said in 1990 “Yo Tommy, I didn’t hear no bell”Waterford added a further five points before the break bringing their first half tally to 1-9. Four of the points coming from the trustworthy camán of Áine Lyng. The Deise’s star scoring exploits in semi finals continuing, averaging five points in each of the four semi finals played. Their opponents finished the half on 1-4. A healthy lead, but a deceptively strong wind blowing towards the City end goal defended by Laois was a distinct help to the Deise.

Good Start to Second Half

Waterford continued as they finished bringing their tally to 1-12 with points from Karen Kelly, Trish Jackman, Nicola Morrissey and Kelly again. But it was far from plain sailing. Laois were working hard without reward on the scoreboard, if they maintained the work rate the tide would turn. An eight point lead in many sports is unassailable but in camogie as in hurling it’s just enough to enable you to suck in some extra oxygen.Laois had the next three points and started to ask questions of Waterford’s mental fortitude. The ghosts of Páirc Tailteann, Templemore and Cashel, locations of the three previous semi final defeats, floated into view. Striking deteriorated, the sliothar now only travelling half the distance, weighted down by fear of failure. Scenting weakness the Midlanders battled frantically to bridge the gap.

Courage

There’s a time to paint and decorate but there also comes a time to scrub the decks, this required all hands on deck, brushes at the ready. It seemed as if every player now resided in the Waterford half. A reflex save from Aisling O’Brien, a timely intervention by Shauna Kiernan, a boot from Vicki Gaffney, a Kate Marie Hearne interception. A season’s work now depended on courage, and all were playing their part. Shona Curran fielded and ran, it was imperative not to concede a goal. Goalscoring hero Gráinne Kenneally was now protecting the net she billowed in the first half.Laois earned a series of twenty meter frees as they searched for the goal needed to bridge the gap. Louise Mahony whistled one towards the roof of the net, Mary O’Donnell defiantly deflected it over the bar and into the building site of the new stand in Nowlan Park. Incessant attacking was countered by ceaseless shielding of the Waterford goal. Mairead Murphy picked and soloed, Charlotte Raher blocked and harried, team captain Sally O’Grady was bravery personified.Áine Breathnach pointed to restore Waterford’s six point lead but it gave no respite. The anxiety was palpable even as injury time approached. Finally the whistle sounded and the initial feeling of relief was replaced by euphoria and the realisation that the summit is in site. A great day for the players and mentors.  An historic day for Waterford Camogie and all who have dreamed of seeing the Daughters of The Deise play in The Theatre of Dreams on September days.

Following on their emphatic win over Down, and with the experience of playing in last years final at H.Q. Offaly will carry the mantle of favorites. ALL IRELAND PUCK FADA CHAMPION

Gall Tir's Patricia Jackman represented her County in style on Saturday last August 1st in the Cooley Mountains Co. Antrim when she represented both her County and Munster in the All Ireland Camogie Puck Fada Compettion. This was Patricia's fourth year taking part in this All Ireland competition and was knocking on the door for the past three years when she came second in each occasion.

Patricia was all out to capture this inaugural prize and used the past three years experience to her advantage. The Waterford girl was one puck ahead of her nearest rival at the half-way point and ended up winning the competition by two pucks, she completed the 2.5 Km course in 29 pucks.

Well done to Patricia, and hopefully that this will be the first of three possible All Ireland medals for her this year as she is a member of the Waterford Minor camogie team who have qualified for the All Ireland final against Limerick. Also she is a member of the Waterford County team who are in the All Ireland Junior Semi-final on Saturday August 8th against Laois in Nolan Park.

GALA ALL IRELAND NEW CUP JUNIOR CAHMPIONSHIP

Waterfords County camogie team will play in the Junior All Ireland Semi-final in Kilkenny's Nolan Park on Saturday next August 8th. Their opponents on this occasion will be Laois. Having beaten last years All Ireland finalists Offaly, northerners Down and Dublin in the qualifying round of this championship the Deise girls topped the group going into the all Ireland Semi-final. Indeed Laois will present a difficult challenge as they have players on their panel from reigning Junior Club All Ireland champions Harps. It would be a great boost to Waterford camogie if they could get to the all Ireland final as it is every girls dream from a young age to play in the 'Hallowed Turf' in Croke Park. The girls truly deserve a victory next Saturday as they have trained vigorously since last October. Best of Luck to everyone involved!.

 PRIMARY COUNTY DEVELOPMENT SQUAD

The Primary County Development Squad had their blitz on Saturday the twenty sixth of June in Mallow GAA complex.

The team was successful against Kerry and Cork B which were our first two matches and put up a good battle against Tipperary and Clare.

The weather was good and  a great day was had by all. Many thanks to our sponsers ,the Waterford Supporters Club and the parents who were enthusiastic supporters and helpers.Jenny, Ollie, Niamh and Martina would like to thank the girls who were a pleasure to train over the past ten weeks. The pitch in Dungarvan was a fun place to be on Tuesdays and thanks to Dungarvan GAA club for allowing us to use it.

Waterford Minor Team break the deadlock with Offaly

The Waterford Minor camogie team took to the field of play in the first round of the All Ireland U18B Championship on Saturday last.Their opponents were last years All Ireland minor B champions Offaly. The Deise girls had two points to prove this year as Offaly beat them in the first round of the championship last year at the same venue Mount Bolus Co. Offaly and were subsequently beaten by the same team in the All Ireland final in Athy in September.

Indeed from the very first touch of the ball both teams were on the attack and it was Offaly who got the first break when they were awarded a 45M free from the first clash of the game which was converted over the bar by Shauna Flynn. But that didn't dishearten the Waterford side when Waterford's full-forward Deirdre Fahy grabbed the ball from the puck-out and ran through to score a well taken point, minutes later the speedy forward converted another well taken point. But the Offaly centre forward Ailsa Hughes had other ideas when she scored the next two points followed by a Shauna Flynn point.Waterford needed to score the next score to settle them, and it was Waterfords corner forward Kate Rockett who grabbed the ball and hit the back of the Offaly net which put the Waterford girls ahead by one point. It was Offaly's Ailsa Hughs who scored the next point of the match to put the sides level. Trish Jackman of Waterford scored the next point before a scuffle at the Offaly goal-mouth which resulted in Katie Hannon pulling the ball into the back of the Offaly net followed by a Caithriona McGlone point. Before the final whistle of the first half Offalys Shauna Flynn scored the final point of the half from a free, leaving the half time score of Waterford 2-4 Offaly 0-6.

After the first half's intensity, the Waterford girls came out with all guns blazing, not being complacent with the first half's score, driving forward with centre forward Trish Jackman scoring the first point of the half followed by she scoring the next point from a 45M free. At this point Offaly began to get very determined in the way they played and held Waterford scoreless for the next 12 minutes with Offaly scoring 4 points in this time frame, leaving the score only  two points between the teams with  ten minutes to go in the game. Once again Waterfords Trish Jackman stepped up to take a 45M free which she scored a lovely point. The tiring Deise side dug deep and from a hand pass from Trish Jackman to the awaiting Marie Russell slotted the ball over the bar to score Waterfords Assurance point. To end the game Offaly were awarded a free in which the ever accurate Shauna Flynn converted, ending the score Waterford 2-8 Offaly 0-11.

This game gave the Waterford side great confidence going into the next round, which will be played on July 12th at a home venue against either Derry or Meath.

All Ireland Junior Camogie Championship June 20th Kinnitty

Waterford 3-11 Offaly 0-7            Excellent Start to All-Ireland Campaign                 A very promising first outing for Waterford in this years All Ireland Championship on Saturday in Kinnitty as they overcame last years beaten finalists with 11 points to spare. What a difference a year makes, in the semi-final last year Offaly were victors in rain soaked Cashel by the exact same margin! The Deise girls travelled to the venue at the foot of the beautiful Slieve Bloom Mountains with a point to prove, this they did and issued an emphatic statement in the process. They have built on their National League and Munster Championship form & now look a very formidable outfit. The visitors opened strongly and registered three unanswered points from Áine Lyng, Karen Kelly and a superb Mairead Murphy effort. Offaly were shaken further when a speculative shot from the in form Kelly travelled all the way to the net.  An Offaly attack that registered fourteen points in last years game was making no headway against the close marking Waterford rearguard. Time and again the full back line of Vicki Gaffney, Sally O’Grady and Kate Marie Hearne repelled attacks with goalkeeper Aisling O’Brien back to her best also. The net minder marshalled her defence brilliantly, constantly communicating and her exceptionally long deliveries launched a succession of attacks.Offaly had to wait until the 19th minute to register their first score a Michaela Morkan pointed free. As it turned out they were not to score from play in the first half, adding two further points from placed ball before the break. They dominated most of the play for the last ten minutes of the half but were never given a clear sight of the posts as their opponents worked relentlessly in the summer heat.Crucial ScoreA crucial point by marauding wing back Jennie Simpson increased Waterford’s lead to five points on 29 minutes. Ten minutes had elapsed since their last score and this gave the team a vital lift as they headed for the cool shelter of the dressing rooms. The home team were slow to emerge as they engaged in some gamesmanship for the recommencement of proceedings ignoring the referees whistle as Waterford waited in the sun. For the first few minutes it looked like it worked as they again pressurised the Waterford goal but only managed to add two further points from a frees. In between Nicola Morrissey had raised a white flag for Waterford to preserve their advantage.Waterford maintained their outstanding work rate, and with astute use of the hand pass were constantly finding a free player to clear their lines. The sides exchanged points leaving the score 1-7 to 0-6 with fourteen minutes left to play. Finely balanced with the heat taking its toll the fittest team would prevail. Waterford have been busy preparing under the diligent eye of fitness guru Shay Fitzpatrick and this effort now paid its dividend. Two Goal SalvoTerrific combination play between Gráinne Kennelly and Aine Lyng opened up the Offaly defence and Trish Jackman bulged the net with a powerful shot.  Two minutes later Offaly were cut open again by incisive movement of the Waterford attack with Lyng handpassing to the net killing off the Faithful County’s challenge in the process.A flurry of points brought the final tally to 3-11 an excellent return, particularly pleasing for the team management will be the way the forwards worked together to create openings for one and other. The final whistle brought relief for Offaly as Waterford grew in confidence with each passing minute. Team management of Carolyn Aherne, Andy Maloney and Niall Dunphy will take many positives from the match. The foundation was a marvellous defensive performance, wing back Pauline Cunningham catching the eye in particular turning defence into attack frequently. The St Anne’s midfield duo of Charlotte Raher and Mairead Murphy worked tirelessly right through and dominated their counterparts for the hour. The key now will be to carry this into the next match on July 18th against Down at a neutral venue.Waterford: Aisling O’Brien, Kate Marie Herne, Sally O’Grady (Capt.,), Vicky Gaffney, Jennie Simpson (0-1), Mary O’Donnell, Pauline Cunningham Mairéad Murphy (0-2), Charlotte Raher, Áine Lyng (1-3), Nicola Morrissey (0-1), Trish Jackman (1-1) Shona Curran, Gráinne Kenneally, Karen Kelly (1-3), Shauna Kiernan, Niamh Ryan, Deirdre Fahey, Marie Russell and Lisa Prendergast, Aileen Cummins,  Aisling Kelly, Áine Breathnach, Roisin Heylin, Rachel Whelan, Margo Heffernan, Lorraine Whelan. Offaly: Audrey Kennedy, Fiona Stephens, Lorraine Kenna, Karen Brady, Sheila O’Sullivan, Michaela Morkan ( 0-3), Linda Sullivan,  Marion Crean, Karen Nugent, Tina Hannon, Arlene Watkins (0-1), Elaine Darmody (0-3), Natalie McCabe , Arlene Watkins, Michelle Davis, Siobhan Flannery,  Shauna Flynn, Jean Brady, Amie Dooley, Elaine Sullivan, Aoife Kelly, and Aoife Corrigan.Referee Dermot Connolly (Gaillimh)

NATIONAL CAMOGIE PRESIDENT ADDRESSES WATERFORD CO. BOARD MEETING

On Tuesday evening last June 2nd National Camogie President Joan O Flynn was a guest of honour at Waterford Co. Board meeting, which was held in the immaculate Cappoquin Community Centre. The East Cork woman who hails from Ladysbridge just outside Youghal thanked Co. Chairperson Anne Marie O'Gorman and Co. secretary Bernie Keane for inviting her to the meeting. She said that she was delighted to meet everyone and that it was her intention to meet every Co. Board in the country this year to hear their views on the camogie scene. Since her inauguration on March 28th she has met with the Cork, Galway,West Meath, Clare, Down and Waterford Co. Boards.

Joan stated that her main priority in her three year term as president is to grow the number of clubs playing camogie and to give every girl the opportunity to play camogie. As there are 535 camogie clubs in the country, it is her aim to promote camogie and to build on areas where there are hurling clubs to give the girls the same opportunities as their male counterparts.

In her address the president commended Waterford Co. Board for the development of camogie in the county and was delighted to see that there were three new clubs formed in Waterford last year. She also commended the standard of Waterford camogie over the last number of years and that it is on the way up. Such as the Blackwater Community School in Lismore who won the senior C title last year and came back this year to win the senior B title this year. She was delighted to have the County team move up the ranks also, as they beat Cork in the Intermediate Munster final this year. Joan also mentioned that the Co. U16's were also in hard luck to be beaten in the all Ireland B Final this year. She complimented all the hard work being done by various team mentors in training all the teams.

There were several issues that the president addressed on the night, such as trying to encourage teenage girls to keep playing camogie. Trying to promote the game through the media both locally and nationally and trying to get the same recognition as the GAA. She also stated the importance of both camogie and GAA to work hand in hand, as both play for the same clubs and colours and that both  should learn from each other. When the president finished her address to the meeting there was a question and answer session from the floor, with several view points being expressed. At the end of the night the president once again thanked everyone for inviting her and was delighted to hear every ones view on the issues of camogie.

HEARTBREAK FOR WATERFORD U16'S IN ALL IRELAND FINAL WATERFORD 1-12  WEXFORD 2-11

Waterford U-16 Camogie team played in the All Ireland U-16B final on Saturday last in Piltown Co. Kilkenny against neighbouring rivals Wexford.

The game was set to be a very tough encounter as both teams had comprehensive victories in both their groups. In very favourable conditions Waterford played the first half against a slight breeze, but it was Wexford who came out of the blocks first.

In the first minute of play as they attacked the Waterford backline resulting in a scuffle at the Waterford goal mouth and Waterford’s Helen O'Donnell bringing off a spectacular save, but was caught on the rebound by Wexford’s Susie McGovern, who blasted the ball into the back of the Waterford net.

Waterford got the ball up the field from the puck-out resulting in 45 metre free in which Waterford’s Captain Michelle Tobin slotted over the bar. This settled the Waterford side, and now we were starting to come into the game.

Waterford’s Caroline Farrelly scored the second point for her side before Wexford replied with another well taken point. Aoife Hannon was in fine form fielding some very high balls and scoring some fine points from play. Michelle Tobin was also on form scoring some fine points from placed balls. This game was indeed a very entertaining one, with only 2 points separating the teams at half time. Waterford 0-8 Wexford 1-6.

The second half began, with Wexford having all the play for the first 15 minutes, scoring 4 points without reply. Then on the 16th minute Michelle Tobin scored 2 points from frees, which settled the Waterford girls. Ruth Geoghegan added one  more point to their tally, then out of the blue the unstoppable Aoife Hannon hit the back of the Wexford net from outfield bringing the teams level.

At this stage there was only six minutes left and it was all to play for. Wexford once more dug deep and scored a goal at the other end. Try as they might Waterford were only able to score one point which meant that there was two points between both teams as the final whistle blew ending in a heart aching score of Waterford 1-12  Wexford 2-11.
